Springtime Puppies

When spring is in the air, it's that time of year for puppies and kittens to be born. Here are some tips if you're expecting:

  • Keep your dog or cat on a balanced diet. She's eating for more than one.
  • Go to your regular veterinarian for check-ups. They can take x-rays later on in the pregnancy to determine how many babies you can expect.
  • Provide a spot of your pet to nest. This can be as elaborate as a whelping box or as simple as blankets on the floor.
  • Watch for signs of labor. These include digging, restlessness, and muscle contractions.
  • If your pet has been actively pushing for 15 minutes and no pet is present you need to contact a veterinarian.
  • If it has been two hours since the last pup was delivered then you need to contact a veterinarian.
  • If a puppy is not latching on to a nipple to feed you can encourage it by gently opening it's mouth and inserting the nipple into it. Make sure you milk the nipple a little first to be certain it's producing milk.
  • Thank you and enjoy.  These puppies were delivered by c-section at our hospital on February 2006.
