Chocolate Toxicity

Some of you might have heard that chocolate is toxic for dogs and cats. Here's the lowdown on our favorite sweet treat.

  • Chocolate is indeed toxic but the toxicity varies with the type of chocolate, the size of the animal, and how much was eaten.
  • Unsweetened baker's chocolate and semisweet chocolate tends to be more toxic than your average milk chocolate.
  • Signs of toxicity include anxiety, restlessness, and seizures.
  • If you have any questions or concerns, please call us or your regular veterinarian for further information and advice.
  • Treatment may include inducing vomiting, activated charcoal to absorb the toxins, and IV fluids while the animal is in the hospital.
  • Here's a list of toxic doses. As every animal will react differently, these are only approximated doses. You should bring your pet in if they are displaying any signs of toxicity.
