Allergic Reactions

October 29, 2008

Allergic reactions can occur for various reasons. These can include recent vaccinations, a new diet or treat, and a bug bite or sting. Sometimes your dog may come in from outside with a puffy face with no explanation at all. Always contact your veterinarian if you suspect an allergic reaction.

Symptoms:

     Mild:

  • Fever
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite

     Moderate:

  • Hives
  • Swelling/redness of the face, muzzle, eyes
  • Itching

     Severe: Can Be Life-Threatening!

  • Anaphylaxis, a severe reaction that includes swelling of the airway
  • Drop in blood pressure
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Collapse
  • Possibly death

What to do:

  • Contact your veterinarian, or us if they are unavailable.
  • If your dog is itching, try to stop them until you can get them some relief. In their attempt to scratch, they may injure themselves, including those sensitive eyes.
  • If your dog is having problems breathing or is showing any other signs of a severe reaction, call a veterinarian immediately! Life saving measures may be necessary. Thankfully, severe reactions are rare, but they are still a concern.
  • Please keep in mind that an uncomfortable dog will be unable to get rest, which may in turn keep you up at night. Never hesitate to get help if your pet needs it.
